Sandy beaches are popular with the bipeds… but some beaches exist for their own pleasure alone. This rocky stretch enjoys views, wide open space, full exposure to the tides – and solitude. At first the rocks seem uninviting – as if it is not made for life. But then one begins to notice all the many species of plants that have anchored themselves into the bed of stones. Look very closely, and animal life becomes evident as well. I pick a spot and sit there for a while – the strong sea breeze reminding me who is boss – watching from a vantage point unfavoured and therefore also rare. And I think about how boring the world would be if all we had were just the spaces we were comfortable in.
